History

Wimborne District Society Of Model Engineers

The above society was formed in 1975 by a few enthusiasts with a common interest in model engineering and small steam locomotives in particular.

Our first objective was to find a site upon we could build a layout. We approached Wimborne council with a offer to build a layout similar to what you see on the photo's in one of the councils recreation parks, our offer was rejected.

In 1975 flight refuelling sports & social club kindly offered us the present site.

All the structures and landscaping on our layout have been built by the members past and present. The station building was constructed from the timbers of the old platelayers hut at Wareham station & the signal box from redundant bricks from Poole station after it was rebuilt. Both items sold to us for a small donation to a railway charity.

O|The points of interest are the footbridge made from old telegraph poles & the tunnel of large pipes all materials have been collected by members from many different sources.

The most important item of any railway is the track, ours is prefabricated jig welded lengths using 12mm square section & steel plates for the sleepers. These completed sections of the track are laid on ballast. Occasional attention is required as in full size to maintain alignment.

Should you have any questions about our railway or if you are interested in railways/models engineering why not join us & help run this one, We can offer a friendly and out going club and will endeavour to welcome any help, talk to any member for more information.

The steam locomotives you see here, are coal fired and work at a steam pressure of around 100lbs per sq inch. Since opening diesel locomotives have become more popular. We have several models here powered by batteries or petrol.

All engines have been built by hand using various techniques. The drivers will be pleased to answer any questions you have.

Built to pull passengers, As like there full size counterparts, They are small locomotives not models.

Unlike most miniature railways our track is laid at ground level and has point work which means that the drivers of trains, As in full size, Are unaware of the position of other trains on the track, This has made it essential for safety reasons that a signalling system has been installed. Old semaphore and coloured lights have been used, in addition we have installed an automatic system operated by the trains themselves, this prevents a train from entering a section occupied by another.

All this may seem a little over the top but we carry what is your most precious possession, Your children. All our efforts have been & will carry on to be directed to making this a safe railway for you and your family.

WE ALL HOPE YOU HAVE AN ENJOYABLE DAY AT OUR RAILWAY WHEN YOU VISIT
